Oast Cowl Painting
Oast cowl painting is very straightforward. Once the outer timber casing is removed, the inner frame is revealed. This enables us to easily replace rotten timber, clean, maintain and refurbish it.
New timber cladding is pre-cut to size and simply attached to the cowl's main frame. The cowl is then decorated to a very high standard using the ICI Paints Akzonobel method.
We also replace the leaded tops, providing long-term paintwork protection.

Oast Cowl Cleaning
Over 3000 GRP cowls are in situ in Kent and Sussex alone. All of these require cleaning and maintenance at some stage of their life. GRP cowls are light but evenly balanced and will last a lifetime with the correct maintenance.
We are by far the cheapest and most professional maintainers of oast cowls.
How It Works
Painting of oast cowls is a craft, unlike any other form of timber painting. We expect our cowls to last longer than any other costly bespoke method of preparation. We achieve this simply by replacing the timber. If you paint an old timber cowl, it will only last a few years, so we leave this method to others.
The newly treated softwood, prepared in a workshop, is then secured to the frame and painted. This method surpasses the old, labour-intensive, and outdated method of sanding down old dried-out timber.
Wood is a hygroscopic material, which absorbs condensable vapour. Older timber thus absorbs moisture and then releases it through the newly applied paint, making it peel or deteriorate more quickly. Of course, moisture levels vary from piece to piece, but if one piece of a cowl is rotten, the rest will only be a few years behind.
